1st Sunday: One of your Favorite Books and why is it so special to you

Despite my rather extensive collection of non-fiction books, there are not very many that I would claim to be among my favorite books. However, Wesley the Owl is one of the exceptions. I adore barn owls. I think it originally extended from a certain film I watched growing up, but Legend of the Guardians: The Owls of Ga’Hoole made it worse and I had no chance against not reading Wesley the Owl. O’Brien’s book elicited a rare reaction from me: I cried at the end. I loved this story so much that I had to have it on my shelves even though I knew it would break my heart every time I read it.

3rd Sunday: One of your Favorite Authors and why you pick their books up again and again

It would be wrong on so many levels for me to do this week’s topic without talking about Professor Tolkien.  The man has created One Fandom to Rule Them All, am I right?  Tolkien spent his entire life creating a mythology and I for one cannot get enough of it.  Before you say anything I do own the documentary film Ringers: Lord of the Fans.   Why do I keep coming back?  I’m not quite sure myself.  The Lord of the Rings, The Hobbit, and The Silmarillion have grand epic adventures, but the stories show the best and worst that is possible in people and what consequences their choices have on the rest of the world.  Even though some of the stories might seem like everything is alright in the end, there’s still a tragic price that was paid to achieve that outcome.

He was dedicated to his world and his wife was his Luthien.  Gah, make the romantic feels stop! I can’t take it!

1st Sunday: One of your Favorite Books and why is it so special to you

I had never heard of The Scarlet Pimpernel until I seen it in stores where there was a display case with prettily bound hardcovers for classic books. Naturally there was no description so I took a leap of faith and guess what? I loved it! Orczy’s prose style has me flailing as though I’m watching Gerard Butler singing covers to The Doors. I feel that I must admit I didn’t have much interest in the French Revolution until I read this book. The characters were perfectly delightful. And what Percy does when his wife leaves to demonstrate his love?! Sir Percy Blakeney is definitely one of my favorite literary heroes ever! Do you want to know something else? Chauvelin is one of my favorite literary villains ever too. It’s been so long since I last read this book… I really must stop neglecting my favorites.

I would love to see the musical production of The Scarlet Pimpernel. Listening to Terrance Mann sing “Falcon in the Dive” leaves me near to swooning.

5th Sunday (on the rare occassions): Random book we have read and a quickie review.

From what I have read of Clive Barker’s books I think it’s safe to say that Imajica is still my favorite. (Seems to be a trend where the second book I read of an author tends to be my favorite of their work.) This story is a journey of self discovery. Although it takes place in a fantastical setting the themes are all to familiar as we meet two people who are trying to find their place in the world and regain memories of their murky pasts. I fell in love with the story and the characters, not to mention Barker’s prose style.

4th Sunday: A book on your TBR list, why you picked it, and when do you hope to read it

I’ve had this book for a few years now. I’m a Tolkien fan so it would be odd if I didn’t select it to read at some point, right? I had thought to read it last year along with my History of Middle-Earth series, but I’ve gotten to the point where I want to save all my Tolkien books for last in my quest to decimate my TBR pile. It’s my intend to read all those other books I got for very cheap or ones I have forgotten why I bought them because I imagine I could free up some shelf space. I know I won’t part with my Tolkien books and I don’t want to feel overwhelmed by other books that need to be read while I’m leafing through the pages so there’s no rush on it. I doubt I will get around to Letters for this year unless I get some major reading done in the next eight months, but it might be something to look forward to for 2013.
